Counterpoint: you won't know if you can improve if you don't try. I don't know who is insulting you for your style, but keep in mind that sometimes, people just want to give advice but word it kinda wrong or are jerks about it. Don't be afraid to experiment or get out of your comfort zone once in a while; the results may vary but you'll learn some things about drawing along the way.
